Information about Singapore
Singapore is a uniquely distinctive place to live and study. With a total land area of just 646 square kilometers, it is a compact country brimming with the vibrancy of its 4 million people.

Why Study in Singapore
The study, conducted by the International Association for Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) based in Boston, USA, certified the high quality of Mathematics and Science education provided in Singapore’s public schools. This is further proven when Singapore emerged first in both the Mathematics and Science study, which is carried out in 49 countries, of Grade 4 (Primary 4) and Grade 8 (Secondary 2) students in 2002-03.
Currently there are 4 local universities in Singapore
The first institute of higher learning in Singapore, National University of Singapore (NUS) was acknowledged as one of the finest universities in the world. In Times of London survey of the 200 best universities in the world for 2004, NUS was ranked 18th.
NUS was again placed 9th in league of Engineering and IT faculties in a survey, ahead of many renowned universities.
A well established Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was amongst the world’s top 100 MBA schools, having MBA students who were rated as among ‘the best in the world’ in a 2004 study by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Recently, the university is developing into full-fledged comprehensive university, offering many courses such as Aerospace Engineering, Psychology, Sociology, Bioengineering etc.
Officially incorporated on 12 January 2000, Singapore Management University (SMU) is Singapore's third university.
The university continues its existing role as a quality university offering business and management education.
Its educational and administrative practices are modeled after American institutions, in particular the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which has played a central role in SMU's development.
SIM University (UniSIM) is the first and only local university in Singapore dedicated to working adults. Established in 2005, UniSIM is approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to award recognised Singapore degrees. From July 2008, MOE will subsidise tertiary education at UniSIM for eligible adult Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents as part of the national initiative to promote continuing education and training. All UniSIM degree programmes are also approved by MOE as a means for non-graduate teachers to upgrade their qualifications.
In The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES)’s 2006 rankings, National University of Singapore (NUS) was ranked 19th in the world and continues to have a strong foothold in the major disciplines. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was ranked 61th and was placed 26th among technology universities, which is a just niche away from being the best in the world.

Overview of Singapore Education System
Singapore has long established itself as an Education hub in Asia. Singapore schools are recognised internationally, and students have aspirations for high levels of achievements. Below is a simplified diagram showing the education progression path.
After secondary education, some students may enter Institute of Technical Education (ITE). Qualified students may opt to study in polytechnics, Junior Colleges and Centralised Institutes (CI).
Institute of Technical Education (ITE) - A post secondary-school institution that provides pre-employment training to secondary school leavers and continuing education and training to working adults.
Polytechnics - Polytechnics were set up with the mission to train middle-level professionals to support the technological and economic development of Singapore. There are currently 5 polytechnics in Singapore.
Junior College and Centralised Institute (CI) - The 2-3 years course in Junior Colleges and Centralised Institutes help to prepare students for university education.Students will receive a school graduation certificate after GCE 'A' examination.
University - Singpore Universities are highly reputable and recognised worldwide. There are 3 universities now: National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU). The 3 universities offer wide range of courses as well as non academic activities.
